Big Lots Corporate Communications & Events Intern
The Butterfly Effect: the scientific phenomenon by which small changes create big impact
This summer, I was given the opportunity to take my passions for event planning and philanthropy to the next level as the Corporate Communications & Events Intern at Big Lots in Columbus, Ohio. As a member of the Philanthropy & Events Team, I managed projects in three focus areas: Associate Volunteerism, Charitable Giving, and Large-Scale Events.
From leading company-wide fundraising campaigns for Pelotonia, to gaining hands-on experience in production, to engaging Big Lots associates from all over the country in associate volunteerism, the projects I led this summer were nothing short of phenomenal. I learned something new each and everyday from my team members and was pushed outside of my comfort zone in ways that enabled me to achieve my highest potential.
Through my internship this summer, I learned the importance of building strong, meaningful relationships. I learned the importance of cross-functional teamwork to the overall success of every project. I learned that social impact does not start and end with a company writing a check; rather, it is brought to life by genuine hard work, lots of sweat, and an organization full of helping hands. I learned the importance of servant leadership, and gained insight into the type of leader I aspire to become.
The video below highlights the various projects I led this summer and paints a picture of my experience at Big Lots. Enjoy!
